The Vietnam Open first started in 1996 and is a part of the Badminton World Federation’s Super 100 series of events. It is held in Ho Chin Minh City and is organized by the Vietnam Badminton Association.
The Vietnam Open features men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles events. The draw for each event is a single elimination bracket. The men’s singles draw size is 48, whereas the remainder of the events have a draw size of 32 players or pairs.
A match is won by a player or team when they win two out of three sets. A set is won by the side who is first to 21 with a difference of at least two points. If the score reaches 20-20, then the side who first assails to a distinct lead of two points wins.
The champion player or team gets 5500 points whereas the runner-up gets 4680 ranking points. A semifinal and a quarterfinals finish is worth 3850 and 3030 ranking points. A prize pool of USD $100,000 is on offer at the Vietnam Open. The singles champions receive $7500, whereas the doubles side gets $7900.
Nguyen Tien Minh and Nguyen Thuy Linh are the two home players who have won the most men’s (four) and women’s (three) singles titles respectively. The Malaysian men’s doubles pair of Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah is the only pair to win the Vietnam Open twice. In women’s doubles, four Indonesian women have won the title twice: Anneke Feinya Agustin, Rosyita Eka Putri Sari, Della Destiara Haris, Rizki Amelia Pradipta. No woman has won the mixed doubles twice. Indonesia’s Tontoni Ahmad is the only man to win the mixed doubles twice.
Indonesia is the most successful nation as of 2024, having produced 30.5 champion players across all categories. The next best nation is China with 14. Home side Vietnam has seen seven title finishes, each of which came in the singles category.
