What is the Shpageeza Cricket League?

The Shpageeza Cricket Tournament is a domestic T20 tournament that is organized by the Afghanistan Cricket Board. The first three editions of the event held in 2013, 2014, and 2016 did not have an official T20 status. It was in 2017, when the event was officially recognised by the International Cricket Council.

The Shpageeza Cricket Tournament is played between franchise teams representing different regions of Afghanistan. Currently, the participating teams are Band-e-Amir Dragons, Amo Sharks, Boost Defenders, Mis Ainak Knights, and Speenghar Tigers. The teams who were previously a part of the event were Hindukush Stars, Kabul Eagles, and Pamir Zalmi. Each team comprises of players from Afghanistan, Under-19 Afghan players, players from the Afghanistan A side, and non-Afghanistan players.

A league stage is first held when each team plays the other in a double round-robin format. Teams earn two points for a win, zero for a loss, and one point for a draw or no result. If two teams are tied at the same number of points, then the head-to-head record of the tied teams in that event, and the net run-rate decides the better team. The top two teams contest the final.

The Speenghar Tigers, Mis Ainak Knights, and Kabul Eagles have won two titles each. However, ever since the tournament gained recognition from the International Cricket Council, Kabul Eagles, which is now a defunct side is the only team to win the event twice. As far as the existing teams are concerned, since 2017, the Mis Ainak Knights have reached the finals of the tournament four times (one title win).
