What is the format of the Laver Cup?

Laver Cup is a team event in tennis that is played between Team World and Team Europe. Each team comprises of top ranked global athletes from their respective geographic regions. Each team consists of six players. Three players are chosen by default as the top three players in the rankings. The next three players are chosen by the non-playing team captain. This captain is a former legend of the sport.

Laver Cup is held two weeks after the US Open. The venue of the event is usually a city where no ATP Tour event is held. The matches of Laver Cup are played on hard courts. Though it is an ATP sanctioned event, players do not receive any ranking points based on their Laver Cup performance. They are guaranteed a participation fee based on their ranking in addition to $250,000 for each player who is a part of the winning side.

Laver Cup is held for three days. On each day, the points for each match win increases. For example, winning a match on Day 1 is worth 1 point. This increases to 2 points on Day 2 and 3 points on Day 3. Thus, a winner cannot be decided before Day 3. All six players are required to play at least one singles match. A player cannot play more than two singles match. Four players have to take part in doubles compulsorily.

A Laver Cup match is played in the best-of-three sets format. The third set is a set tiebreak which is played when the match is tied at one set apiece. At the end of the third day, if the teams are tied at 12 points each, then a decider match is played as a one-off set. This set is played by ad scoring and tiebreak rules.
As of 2023, Team Europe have won the event four times whereas Team World have won it twice.
