What is the World Championship of Legends in cricket?

The World Championship of Legends is a T20 event organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board. This tournament features retired players from test-playing nations. The tournament itself is played in the T20 format.

The first edition of the event was held in 2024 and was played in a single round-robin league followed by the knockout stages. All matches were held in Birmingham and Northampton. A total of six teams participated in the event – India, Pakistan, Australia, South Africa, West Indies, and England. In the league stage, a team was given 2 points for a win, 1 point for a match that ended in a tie or had no result, whereas no points were deducted for a loss.

If two teams were tied in the points tally, then the better team was decided based on the net run-rate. The top four teams qualified for the semifinals. The teams placed first and fourth contested the first semifinal whereas the teams placed second and third contested another.

The rules for each match was similar to the ones followed for the T20 International matches. Each side had to feature a playing eleven from a squad of at least 15 players. The first six players were considered as a powerplay, where no more than two fielders could be outside the thirty yard circle. No bowler could bowl more than four overs in an innings.

The tournament’s inaugural edition saw India as the victorious side. Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik top scored in the tournament with 245 runs. Among the bowlers, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Brett Lee, Wahab Riaz, and Shoaib Malik picked up nine wickets each.
