What is the Women’s T20 Super League in cricket?

The Women’s T20 Super League is a domestic cricket competition organized by Cricket South Africa. The tournament began in 2019 and was aimed to give a platform to women cricketers who excelled at the T20 format.

When it began in 2019, the event saw participation from teams that were named after their coaches. However, this changed from the subsequent edition of the tournament. The participating teams were Coronations, Starlights, Thistles, and Duchesses. For the 2022 edition, the Duchesses were replaced by the U-19 women’s team of South Africa to help them prepare for the subsequent ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

Players in each team are chosen based on a draft system that is released before the event. The competition follows a double round-robin format where each team plays the other twice. A win is worth two points, a tie is worth one point, and no points are deducted for a loss. If a match is abandoned or is unable to produce a result, then both teams get one point each.

At the end of the round-robin stage, the table toppers are crowned the champions. If two teams are tied at the same number of points, then the better side is decided by the one who has a superior net run-rate.

As of 2024, Starlights have won one title whereas Coronations have won two titles. In 2022, the Starlights topped the group at the end of all matches. However, due to many matches being washed out due to rain, no official champion was declared for that edition.

Sune Luus is the highest run-scorer of the tournament with 477 runs to her name. The leading wicket-taker is Masabata Klaas with 15 wickets, followed by Tumi Sekhukhune who has 13 wickets. (Bowling records for the latest edition of the Women’s T20 Super League can be inaccurate).
