What is the Women’s London Championship in cricket?

The Women’s London Championship is a women’s cricket tournament organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board. It began in 2020 alongside the inception of the highest One Day International domestic tournament, the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.

The Women’s London Championships is played in the One Day International format and is played between teams from Home Counties. The Home Counties are those county areas that surround London. Essex, Kent, Middlesex, Surrey, and Sussex are the five participating teams of the competition.

The tournament was first trialled in 2020, before launching its first official edition in 2021. Held in the fifty-over format, each team plays the other in a round-robin format. A match win is worth ten points whereas no points are deducted for a loss or an abandoned match. In case of a tie, both teams get five points each.

In addition to the league points, teams are also awarded bonus points for their batting or bowling performances. The batting side gets one, two, three, or four bonus points for having a run-rate of 1.5, 2, 3, and 4. The bowling side get one, two, three, or four bonus points if they manage to take 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, or 9-10 wickets. If two teams are tied at the same number of points at the end of the league stage, then net run-rate acts as the tiebreak.

Surrey have won the title twice, whereas Essex, Kent, and Middlesex have won one title each. Sussex, who were not a part of the trial competition held in 2020, is yet to win the title as of 2024.
