What is the Women’s Caribbean Premier League?

The Women’s Caribbean Premier League is a T20 competition governed by Cricket West Indies. It began in 2022 and runs parallel to the men’s event.

The three participating teams as of 2024 are Barbados Royals, Trinbago Knight Riders, and Guyana Amazon Warriors. Each team comprises of women’s cricketers from both West Indies and other countries. In a playing eleven, no more than four overseas players can be roped in.

All the three teams play each other in a double round-robin format. The league stage ends when each team has played the other team twice. A match win is worth two points, a tie or drawn or abandoned match is worth one point, and no points are awarded for a loss. At the end of the league stage, the top two teams contest the final. If two teams are tied at the same number of points then net run-rate and match wins act as tiebreakers.

The Barbados Royals have twice won the Women’s Caribbean Premier League whereas the Trinbago Knight Riders have won the event once. Hayley Mathews is the leading run-scorer of the competition after the first three editions having scored 424 runs. The next best batter is Deandra Dottin with 326 runs.

Hayley Mathews is also the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 23 wickets to her name. The next best bowler is Shabnim Ismail with 16 wickets. Ismail is the only bowler to claim two four-wicket hauls. Sophie Devine is the only batter to have scored a century in the tournament thus far.
