The Tokyo Open is one of the oldest outdoor hard court events that is played on the professional tennis circuit. It is classified as an ATP 500 event and is held at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan.
The Tokyo Open schedules both a singles and a doubles tournament. A singles elimination draw format is followed for both the competitions. The main draw size of singles is 32 whereas that if the doubles event is 16. In singles, there is also a qualifying draw of 24, out of which four make it to the main draw.
To win a match, players need to win two sets that is played in the best of three sets format. When the set score reaches a score of six games all, a tiebreak is played. The player who wins seven points with a difference of two points wins the set. In doubles, a final set is played as a tiebreak. The most successful singles player at the Tokyo Open is Stefen Edberg, having won the title four times. He is also the only player to win the title twice as an ATP 250 event and as an ATP 500 evebt. In doubles, Rick Leach has been a part of three doubles winning champion sides.
