What is the Pan Pacific Open in tennis?

The Pan Pacific Open is a professional women’s tennis tournament that is held in Tokyo. The first edition of the event was held in 1973. It is currently a part of the WTA 500 series of events on the Women’s Tennis Association tour.

The tournament features a singles and a doubles event. A single elimination knockout draw format is followed for both events. The size of the main draw is 28 for singles and 16 for doubles. Out of 28, the singles draw has four spots for players making it through the qualifying draw (of 16) and three for wild card entrants.

All matches are contested in the best of three sets format. A player or team wins a set when they win six games with a difference of two. If both sides are tied at six games all, then a tiebreak is played. The one who reaches seven points first with a difference of two wins the set. Scoring in doubles differs in the third set which is played as a match tiebreak. The team who is first to ten points with a clear lead of two points is the winner of the match.

The champion of both singles and doubles events earn 500 ranking points whereas the runners-up of the event get 325 points. As of 2024, the total prize pool of the outdoor hard court event is USD $922,573. The champions of the singles and doubles events are rewarded with USD $142,000 and USD $47,390 respectively.

Martina Hingis has won a record five singles titles at the event. However, the Swiss won these titles when the event was played in indoor conditions on carpet courts. Ever since the tournament shifted to outdoor hard courts from 2008, Caroline Wozniacki has won three titles. Helena Sukova has won five doubles titles at the tournament when it was held on carpet courts. In doubles, Sania Mirza has won the title thrice since the event transitioned to hard courts.
