The Macau Open is a badminton tournament that was first held as a satellite competition in 2002. It first professional edition was held in 2006. Currently, it is a Super 300 event on the Badminton World Federation’s professional circuit of events.
The Badminton Federation of Macau organized this event and features men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles competitions. Each event is played in the single elimination format wherein 32 players or pairs are placed in the brackets.
A match is won by the player or pair that wins two out of three sets. A set is secured when one side wins 21 points with a difference of two points. Play continues at 20-20 when one of the sides has a clear lead of two points.
The winners in each category are awarded 7000 points whereas the runners-up receive 5950 points. The semifinalists and quarterfinalists receive 4900 and 3850 points respectivy. As of 2024, the total prize pool of the tournament is $210,000. The singles champions get $15,750 whereas the doubles champions side is rewarded with $16,590.
Lee Chong Wei and Lee Hyun-il have won a record two men’s singles titles each. India’s PV Sindhu has won a record three women’s singles title at the Macau Open. The men’s doubles has been won thrice each by Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong. Jung Kyung-eun has featured in two women’s doubles champion pairs. Mixed doubles team of Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir has won a record three titles.
China has produced the most champions as of 2024, with 32 of its players lifting the trophy across all categories. The next best nation in South Korea with 11 champions.
