What is the Korea Masters in badminton?

The Korea Masters is a Super 300 event on the Badminton World Federation’s professional tour. It has been held since 2007 by the Badminton Korea Association and has moved to its eighth venue (Iksan) in 2024.

A total of five events are played in one edition of the Korea Masters. These are the men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The bracket size of each event is 32 players or pairs that follow the single elimination knockout format. The top eight players or pairs are seeded.

Each match is played in the conventional best of three sets format. A set is won when a player wins 21 points with a difference of two. If the score reaches 20-20, then the set winner is the one who first takes a lead of two points.

As of 2024, the tournament has a prize pool for USD $210,000. The singles champions are rewarded with USD $15,700 whereas the title winning doubles pair gets USD $16,590. Additionally, the winners earn 7000 ranking points whereas the runners-up receive 5950 points.

Lee Dong-keun has won a record three men’s singles titles whereas Sung Ji-hyun has won the most women’s singles titles (three). Ko Sung-hyun and Lee Yong-dae have been a part of four men’s doubles title-winning pairs. In women’s doubles, Jung Kyung-eun and Chang Ye-na have won a record five titles each. Kim Ha-na’s tally of three mixed doubles titles is a record amongst the ladies. The men’s counterpart for this feat is with Yoo Yeong-seong and Ko Sung-hyun with three titles each.

South Korea has been the most successful nation, producing 62 title holders across all categories. Such has been their dominance that the next best nation is China with seven titles.
