What is the Jiangxi Open in tennis?

The Jiangxi Open is a professional women’s tennis tournament that is held during the China Open series. It is a part of the WTA 250 series of events. The first two editions of the event held in 2014 and 2015 were lower tier events before the tournament upgraded to WTA 250 in 2016.

The tournament hosts a singles and doubles event with a main draw size of 32 and 16 respectively. Both events are played in the single elimination draw format. The singles main draw has six provisions for qualifiers and three for wild card entrants.

A best of three sets format is followed for all matches of the event. Six games won with a difference of two secures the set in the player or team’s favor. When both players win six games each, then a tiebreak decides the winner of the set. To win the tiebreak, a player has to win seven points with a difference of two. In doubles, if the match goes to a decider, then the winner is decided based on a match tiebreak. The side that is first to ten points with a lead of two wins the match.

The Jiangxi Open champions get 250 ranking points whereas the runners-up get 163 points. As of 2024, the total prize money for the event is USD $267,082. The singles champions earn USD $35,250 whereas the doubles winners are rewarded with USD $12,820. Based on their performances in the Jiangxi Open, Chinese players can benefit by securing a wild card for themselves at the China Open.

Peng Shuai is the only player to have won the tournament twice. She won the event once as a WTA 125k event and once as a WTA 250 event. The Chinese doubles team of Jiang Xinyu and Tang Qianhui have won two titles at the event. They win the doubles event in consecutive years in 2017 and 2018.
