The Hylo Open is a badminton tournament held in Saarbrucken, Germany. It began in 1988 and has constantly shuffled as a Super 100, Super 300, and Super 500 event. As of 2024, it is a Super 300 event on the Badminton World Federation’s circuit.
Five events are played at the tournament namely men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. All events are played in a single elimination knockout draw format. The draw size for each event is 32. The top eight players or teams are seeded in their respective categories.
A match is won when a player or team wins two of three sets. The winner of the set is the one who has won 21 points with a difference of two. At 20-20, play continues till one of them has a lead of two points.
The total prize pool for the tournament in 2024 was USD $210,000. A prize money of USD $15,750 is won by the singles champions and the doubles winners get USD $16,590. The champions also earn a total of 7000 ranking points whereas the runners-up get 5950 points. 3850 and 4900 ranking points are awarded to the quarterfinalists and semifinalists respectively.
The record for most men’s singles titles is won by Chou Tien-Chen who has won four titles. Xu Haiwen has won a record five women’s singles titles. The Danish pair of Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen have won a record three men’s doubles titles. German player Katrin Schmidt has been a part of four teams who won the women’s doubles title. In mixed doubles, Michael Keck’s tally of five titles is highest for a man whereas Karen Stechmann and Katrin Schmidt have won three mixed doubles titles each among the women.
Germany and Denmark are the most successful countries with 38.5 and 37 players of the respective nations winning titles at the Hylo Open.
