The Hong Kong Open is a Super 500 tournament on the Badminton World Federation’s professional annual circuit of events. It first began in 1982 and was started to be held annually. As of 2024, there have been nine seasons which did not feature the Hong Kong Open in the professional circuit.
The tournament is organized by the Hong Kong Badminton Association, and features the following categories: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Each event is played in the single elimination draw format with the bracket size being 32 players or teams. The top eight players or pairs are seeded.
A match is won by a team or player when they win two sets out of three. To win a set, a side needs to win 21 points with a difference of two points. At a score of 20-20, play continues until one of the players or teams has a clear lead of two points.
The champion player or team in each category gets 9200 points, whereas the runner-ups get 7800 points. A semifinal or a quarterfinal finish earns the player 6420 and 5040 points respectively. As of 2024, the tournament’s total prize pool is of $420,000. The singles champions receive $31,500, whereas the doubles champion team gets $33,800 (later to be split between the pair).
