The Guangzhou Open is a WTA 250 event on the professional women’s tennis circuit. It is played on outdoor hard courts and has been held since 2004. It has changed five venues till date and is currently played at the Nansha International Tennis Centre.
The tournament organizes a singles and doubles event. It is played in a single elimination knockout draw format. The size of the main draw for singles is 32 whereas for doubles it is 16. In the singles main draw, six players gain an entry based on their performance in the qualifying draw. Three more spots are reserved for wild card entrants.
A player or a team wins a match when they win two of three sets. Winning six games with a difference of two secures the set for the team or player. If the score is 6-6, a tiebreak is played wherein the first player or team to seven points with a difference of two wins. The deciding set in doubles is played as a match tiebreak where the first to ten points with a difference of two is declared the winner.
The champions in both events earn 250 ranking points whereas the runners-up get 163 points. As of 2024, a total of USD $267,082 is on offer. The singles winners bag USD $35,250 whereas the doubles winners earn USD $12,820.
Zhang Shuai is the only player to win the singles event twice. In doubles, Peng Shuai has won a record four doubles titles at the tournament.
