What is the Inter-Provincial Trophy in cricket?

The Inter-Provincial Trophy is the premier T20 tournament of Ireland. It is played between teams that represent the different provinces of Ireland. In its first four editions starting from 2013 to 2016, three teams participated in the tournament. Starting in 2017, the tournament is contested between four teams.

The teams that compete in the tournament are Leinster Lightning, Northern Knights, North West Warriors, and Munster Reds. The Munster Reds were the latest side to join the tournament. All tournaments are played in the T20 format.

The tournament is played in a triple round-robin format. This means that one team faces the other team thrice. A team earns four points for a win, two points for a tie or a shared result, and zero for a loss. Additionally, a team who wins a match can get 1 bonus point if their run rate is 1.25 times more than the opposition.

The tournament is won by the team with the most points at the end of the league stage. If there is a tie at the top spot in terms of points, then the winner is decided based on the net run rate.

Leinster Lightning is the most successful team with seven titles to their name. Stephen Doheny has scored the most runs as of 2024, hitting 854 runs in 32 innings. The most successful bowler is Craig Young with 61 wickets in 36 matches. The tournament has witnessed four centuries till date. The highest score recorded by a team is 260 runs which was hit by Leinster Lightning. The lowest total was by Munster Reds who were all out for 76 runs.
