Along side the All England Open, Indonesia Open, and Malaysia Open, the China Open is one of the four Super 1000 events on the Badminton World Federation’s professional circuit of events. The China Open started in 1986, and has been held annually, barring six seasons.
The event is organized by the Chinese Badminton Association. It features competitions in all five disciplines of the sport: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Each event is played in the single elimination draw format, with the brackets for each category housing 32 players or pairs.
A match is won by a player or pair who wins two out of three sets. A set is won by the side who is first to 21 points with a difference of two. In a scenario where the set reaches a score of 20 points apiece, the player or side who is first to take a leaf of two points wins.
A staggering 13,500 ranking points are given to the champion, whereas the finalist receives 11,500 points. Even a semifinal or quarterfinal finish will earn the player 9500 and 7400 points respectively. The event has a whopping prize pool of $2,000,000 as of 2024. The singles champion receives $140,000 and the doubles champions team gets $148,000.
