What is the Chengdu Open in tennis?

The Chengdu Open is a professional tennis tournament on the men’s tennis circuit. It is played on hard courts and is held during the Asian swing. It is classified as an ATP 250 event. The tournament has been held annually since it began in 2016 except from 2020 to 2022 where it was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tournament features a singles and a doubles competition. Played in outdoor conditions, a total of 28 singles players are placed in a single elimination draw bracket. The doubles main draw size is that of 16 pairs. Both events are held in the same week.

Players need to win two sets in a best of three sets match to secure victory. A singles player will have to play a tiebreak in each set should the score reach six games apiece. This tiebreak is won by the player who is first to seven points with a difference of two points. In doubles, if both teams win one set each, then the deciding set is played as a tiebreak. The tiebreak and subsequently the match, is won by the pair who is first to ten points with a difference of two.

The champion earns 250 ranking points. In singles and doubles, the runners-up receive 165 and 150 points respectively. As of 2024, the prize pool of Chengdu Open is USD 11,71,655. Out of this, the singles champion receives USD 178,195, whereas the champions team of the doubles category get USD 61,920.

As of 2024, no player has reached the finals in the singles competition twice. In 2024, the French duo of Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul became the first doubles team to win two titles at the Chengdu Open by successfully defending their title.
