What is the Charlotte Edwards Cup in cricket?

The Charlotte Edwards Cup is the domestic T20 competition of women’s cricket in England and Wales. It began in 2021 and is named after English women cricket’s most capped player, Charlotte Edwards.

Each of the eight teams that participate in the competition represent multiple English counties. The participating teams are Central Sparks, Northern Diamonds, North West Thunder, South East Stars, Southern Vipers, Sunrisers, The Blaze, and Western Storm.

Each team plays ten matches in the round-robin stage. A team plays four single-header matches and three double-headers. A match win is worth 4 points, an abandoned or a match with no result is worth two points, and no points are deducted for a loss. Bonus point is awarded to the team who has a run-rate that is 1.25 times better than the opposition.

If two teams are tied at the same number of points, then the net run-rate, runs in tied matches, and bowling strike rate act as tiebreaker. The top four teams qualify for the semifinals. Teams placed first and fourth contest the first semifinal whereas the second and third placed teams play the second semifinal. Southern Vipers have won the tournament twice. South East Stars and The Blaze have won the event once, and have made the finals twice.

The leading run-scorer of the Charlotte Edwards Cup as of 2024 is Emma Lamb, having scored 726 runs. After its first four editions, Marie Kelly is the only player to have recorded a three-digit score in the tournament. Katie Levick is the leading wicket-taker with 43 wickets. No player as of 2024 has been the leading run-getter or the leading wicket-taker more than once.
