The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is a cricket competition between India and Australia that is played in the test match format. The tournament is named after two former captains of respective countries, Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy was conceived in 1996. Before 1996, India and Australia face each other in 14 series. India won two series, Australia won eight, and the remaining four ended in a draw. After the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was instituted, as of 2024, 16 series have been played. Australia have won 5 series, India has won 8, and one series ended in a draw.
A Border-Gavaskar series has at least three test matches. Out of the 56 test matches played between them in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as of 2024, Australia has won 20 tests, India has won 24, and 12 matches have been drawn. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is known for the home dominance of both teams. India has won an away series of the Border-Gavaskar trophy once, whereas Australia has won twice.
Sachin Tendulkar is the leading run-scorer of the Border-Gavaskar trophy with 3262 runs. He has also been the man of the series on a record three instances. Nathan Lyon is the leading wicket-taker with 116 wickets in the Border-Gavaskar trophy.
In 2023, Australia and India faced each other in the final of the World Test Championships. This was the first match between the two nations since 1991 that was not a part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The match was won by Australia. Since 2016, India has retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on each instance.
