The Thailand Open is a Super 500 tournament on the Badminton World Federation circuit. This professional badminton event was first held in 1984 and is organized by the Badminton Association of Thailand.
The tournament consists of five events, that are the men’s and women’s singles events, men’s and women’s doubles events, and the mixed doubles event. There are 32 players of pairs in each category that are placed in the knockout draw. A match is played by the conventional scoring system of best of three sets, wherein the player or pair who wins 21 points with a difference of two points wins the set.
The winners in each category get 9200 points. The runner-ups get 7800 points, whereas the quarterfinalists and semifinalists get 5040 and 6420 points respectively. The total prize money that the tournament has to offer is $420,000. Out of this, the winners in singles discipline get $31,500, whereas the doubles team that are crowned the champions get $33,180.
As of 2024, the most successful men’s singles player of Thailand Open is Joko Suprianto, who has won three titles. Jung Jae-Sung has been a part of a record three doubles pairs who won the men’s doubles title. Susi Susanti has won a record four women’s singles titles and Greysia Polii has won a record four women’s doubles titles. Park Joo-Bong is the most successful mixed doubles player of the tournament. He has been a part of three title-winning pairs.
China has outright been the most successful side of the tournament with 61 titles. The next best nations are Indonesia and South Korea with 38 and 27 titles respectively. Thai players have managed to be the fourth best team in their home event, winning 13 titles.
