The German Open is a badminton tournament that is a part of the Badminton World Federation’s Super 300 series of tournaments. It is organized by the German Badminton Association (Deutscher Badminton Verband). The first edition of the event was held in 1955.
The tournament features events in men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles category. The draw size for each event is 32 players and 32 pairs. The events are played following a knockout draw. It has been hosted in different cities of Germany.
The winner of the tournament is rewarded with 7000 ranking points, whereas the runner-up and quarterfinalist get 5950 and 4900 points respectively. As of 2024, the prize money for the tournament is $210,000. The singles champion receives $15,750, whereas the doubles champions receive $16,590.
As of 2024, Erland Kops and Lin Dan hold the joint record for winning six men’s singles titles. The men’s doubles titles has been won a record number of five times both Jon Holst-Christensen and Thomas Lund. The latter has also won the most mixed doubles titles (four) for a male player. The women’s counterpart for the record with five titles is credited to Gillian Gilks. The most women’s singles titles (6) have been won by Eva Twedverg and the most women’s doubles titles (4) have been won by Gilkians Gilks.
Denmark has been the most successful team at the event. The country has won a total of 90 titles across all disciplines at the event. The next best teams are China and England with 58 and 37.5 titles each.
