The US Open hard courts swings last for seven weeks in its buildup to the final Slam of the season. Since 2010, the Atlanta Open has been one of the most sought after events on the men’s professional tour. The hard court event is classified as an ATP 250 event.
The event features both a singles and doubles event that is played in a single elimination knockout format. The draw size of the singles event is 28, whereas for the doubles event is 16. Players who could not make it to the main draw can qualify for it through a qualifying draw in singles. A total of six slots out of 28 are available for the qualifiers, whereas four are reserved for wild card entrants. Two wild card slots are avilable for the doubles draw.
Every match of the tournament is played in the best of three sets format. A player wins a set when they win six games with a difference of two. If the set score is tied at six games all, then a tiebreak decides the winner of the set. The player who is first to seven points in the tiebreak with a clear lead of two points wins the set. In doubles, the deciding set is played as a match tiebreak. The pair who wins ten points in the tiebreak first with a difference of two points wins the match.
The winners of the Atlanta Open in both singles and doubles get 250 ranking points. The singles runner-up receives 165 points whereas the doubles runners-up get 150 points. A total prize purse of $756,020 is available at the Atlanta Open. The singles and doubles champions bag $114,970 and $39,950 respectively.
John Isner is the most successful singles player in the tournament’s history, having won six singles titles. In doubles, Matthew Ebden, and the Bryan brothers (Bob and Mike) have won a record-equalling two doubles titles each.
