The CSA T20 Challenge is the premier domestic cricket competition of Africa that is organized by Cricket South Africa. It is played in the T20 format and features city-based franchise teams.
The tournament was first held in 2008 and continues to be held annually. In one edition, Zimbabwe’s national cricket team was also a part of the event. A team representing the Impalas and another team by the name Cape Cobras have previously been a part of the competition. The existing eight teams represent the following 12 cities: Cape Town, Paarl, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Potchefstroom, Johannesburg, Centurion, Benoni, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Kimberley, and East London.
The tournament is played in a league phase followed by a knockout phase. Teams face each other in the double round-robin format in the league stage where each team plays the other twice. A win is worth two points, a drawn or abandoned game is worth one point, and no points are deducted for a loss. If teams are tied at the same points at the end of the league stage, the net run rate decides the better team.
The top four teams qualify for the knockout round. The two table toppers contest the first semifinal. An eliminator is played between the the third and fourth placed teams, the winner of which plays the second semi-final against the loser of the first semifinal.
Titans, the team that represents Centurion and Benoni has been the most successful in CSA T20 Challenge, with six titles to their name. Morne van Wyk is the leading run-getter with 3183 runs to his name. The leading wicket-taker is Aaron Phangiso who has taken a record 108 wickets as of September 2024. Kevin Pietersen and Jon-Jon Smuts are the only players to record two centuries at the tournament. Richard Levi is currently the record holder for most sixes in the event, having struck 107 shots over the boundary line.
