What is the Zim Afro T10 competition in cricket?

The Zim Afro T10 is a cricket league competition that is contested between franchise-based teams from Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Nigeria. It is played in the T10 format where each innings lasts no more than ten overs.

The Zim Afro T10 was first held in 2023 and was contested between five teams. The number of teams expanded to six in the 2024 season. As of 2024, the six teams that compete against each other represent the cities of Durban, Cape Town, Lagos, Bulawayo, Harare, and Johannesburg.

Players are chosen based on a draft system ahead of the tournament. While some players are selected in the pre-draft, the others are decided in multiple rounds. Each round features the following categories of players: Zimbabwe Category A, Category B, and Category C, Zimbabwe Emerging, Overseas Category A, Category B and Category C, West Indies Emerging, Sri Lanka Emerging, Icon, and Global Superstar.

The event is played in two phases: league phase and knockout phase. In the league phase, each team plays the other once. It is notable to mention that the league stage of the 2023 edition was played in the double round-robin format, where each team played the other twice. A match win is worth two points and a drawn or abandoned match is worth one point. No points are deducted for a loss. If two teams are tied at the same number of points at the end of the league stage, the net run rate decides the better team.

The top two teams from the league stage play the first qualifier in the knockout round. The winner of this match proceeds to the final. Teams that were placed third and fourth in the league stage play the eliminator. The winner of this match plays the loser of the first qualifier to decide the second finalist.

As of 2024, Durban and Johannesburg have won one title each. Johannesburg is also the only side to reach the finals of the first two editions.
