What is the United Cup?

The United Cup is an international mixed-gender team championship held before the Australian Open. The tournament replaced the ATP Cup on the calendar in 2022. Played across 11 days and 3 cities, a total of 18 teams participate in the United Cup.

Teams chosen for the United Cup are based on three criteria. The first six teams are based on the highest ranked singles players in the ATP rankings. The next six teams are chosen based on the highest ranked singles players in the WTA rankings. The final six teams are chosen based on the combined rankings of their highest ranked singles players in both ATP and WTA.

The 18 teams are divided into six groups. Perth, Brisbane and Sydney host two groups each. The winners of these groups qualify for the host city play-off final. The winner of each of these finals qualify for the semi-finals. The fourth team is chosen based on the highest ranked team that lost in the host city play-off final.
Each tie is played across two days.

The first day features a men’s singles and a women’s singles match. The next day features singles matches in both the men’s and women’s singles categories, and a mixed doubles match. A team consists of 8 played and no player can play two singles matches. Matches are played by the traditional scoring system in a best-of-three sets format.

The inaugural edition of the United Cup held in 2023 was won by the United States after they defeated Italy in the finals.
