The tournament features six franchise teams, each representing a city of New Zealand. The six teams are Auckland Hearts, Canterbury Magicians, Central Hinds, Northern Braves, Otago Sparks, and Wellington Brave. Starting from the 2022 season, the Women’s Super Smash will also feature international players.
A double round-robin format is used in the league stage. Each team plays the other twice. A win is worth four points, whereas no points are alloted for losing a match. A tie or a match with no result is worth two points. The team who finish at the top of the table directly progresses to the final. The teams that are placed second and third play an eliminator for a spot as the second finalist.
As of 2023, the two most successful sides in the history of the tournament are Wellington Blaze and Canterbury Magicians who have won seven and six titles respectively. Northern Brave is the only team that is yet to reach the final at least once.
Suzie Bates is the only player to score 500 runs in a single edition. Sara Macglashan and Frances Makay are some other successful batters in this event. In the bowling category, only on three instances have bowlers managed to pick 20 wickets in a single edition. Furthermore, there have been six occasions of a bowler getting five-wickets.
