Every cricketing nation has a domestic structure in at least the test and One Day International format. This allows players to understand the pathway of improving their chances to get into the national side. Limited overs cricket played in the ODI format fall under the category called List A matches. Test cricket matches played in a four-day or five-day format are called First class matches.
The Momentum One Day Cup is the premier List A competition of South Africa. It is organized by Cricket South Africa. The tournament has been played since the early 1980s. However, it has went through several reforms and structural changes owing to the fluctuations in South Africa cricket. The latest reforms were introduced in 2020, where franchise-based teams were terminated and teams were divided based on the geographical provinces.
Currently, the tournament sees the teams be divided into two groups. A total of 58 matches are played in the tournament. While there are 15 provincial teams, an additional team called the South Africa Emerging Players team is added to allow for an equal split between two divisions.
Instead of a single winner, the tournament announces two champion sides from each division. The teams face each other in a round-robin format. Teams get 4 points for winning a match and two points for match that is drawn or had no result. The table toppers in each division contest the finals.
The current participating provinces are KwaZulu-Natal (two teams), Free State, Eastern Cape (two teams), Gauteng (three teams), Northwest, Western Cape (three teams), Mpumalanga, Limpopo.
