The Badminton World Federation (BWF) governs professional badminton globally. The federation also manages the youth international events of the sport. The junior mixed team World Championships of badminton is called the Suhandinata Cup.
The tournament is named after Justian Suhandinata, an honorary life Vice President of the Badminton World Federation. In the mid 1980s, he organized a junior competition in Jakarta where all the best junior players of the world were invited. This event ultimately went on to be the forerunner of the World Junior Championships. The first edition of this event was held in 1992.
The Suhandinata Cup was first called so in 2010 after the Suhandinata family donated a stunning trophy to the event. It features boys’ singles, girls’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles, and mixed doubles discipline. Teams are qualified based on their ranking aggregates of the best players of a nation as per the Badminton World Federation.
The tournament features two stages. Initially, matches are held in group stages. A total of 35 to 40 teams are divided into eight groups. In each group, teams play against each other in a round-robin format. The top two teams of each group progress to the next stage.
In the final stage, teams positioned 1st to 8th compete for the title in a knockout format. Based on the positions of the other teams in the group stage, knockout rounds are played between those teams. These knockout rounds decide the position of teams between 9th to 16th, 17th to 24th, 25th to 32nd, and 33rd to 40th position.
As of 2023, China have been the most successful team in the competition. They have won a total of 192 medals as of 2023, out of which 71 are gold medals. The next best teams are South Korea and Indonesia who have won 74 and 79 medals respectively.
The mixed team championships are followed by individual championships called the Eye Level Cups.
