The India Open is a badminton tournament that is a part of the annual professional badminton season. The tournament is sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and is organized by the Badminton Association of India.
The first edition of the tournament was held in 1973 in New Delhi. Initially a part of the Grand Prix circuit, it later ascended as a BWF Superseries event. In 2023, it was upgraded from a Super 500 to a Super 750 event, which is the second highest tier of tournaments in terms of ranking and prize money. Apart from the India Open, five other tournaments are categorised under the Super 750 bracket.
India Open features tournaments played in five different disciplines: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Players face each other in a knockout draw format. The draw size of each discipline is 32.
The winner is awarded 11,000 ranking points, whereas the runner-up gets 9350 points. A shuttler who loses in the first and second round gets 2660 and 4320 points, and the quarterfinalist earns 7700 points. The singles champion gets $59,000 whereas the doubles champions get $62,900 as a team. Players or teams who lose in the opening round get $850.
Indonesia has been the most successful nation, featuring 21 winners across all disciplines up till the 2022 season. Home side India has featured a total of eight winners as of 2023 across all disciplines. As of 2024, the prize pool of the tournament is USD $850,000.
