What is the China Masters in the sport of badminton?

The China Masters is one of the most prestigious badminton tournaments in the world. It is one of the six Super 750 tournaments of the Badminton World Federation Tour. The tournament is held in Shenzhen, China.

The China Masters featured in the BWF Super Series till 2007, after which it was downgraded to BWF Grand Prix Gold. It got bracketed in 2018 as a part of the BWF World Tour Super 750 as the Fuzhou China Open. Starting in 2023, it returns to its original name, the China Masters.

The China Masters is played in all five recognised formats of badminton – men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The winner of the tournament is awarded 11,000 ranking points, whereas the runner-up gets 9350 points. The tournament features a knock-out draw of 32 players. The top eight players are seeded in the bracket.

China has been the most successful player in the tournament. A total of 61 players have won the event as of 2023, across men’s singles (12), women’s singles (14), men’s doubles (7), women’s doubles (12), and mixed doubles (16). The Chinese have been so dominant that the next best successful country in the competition is Japan, who have produced six champions till date (3,1, and 2 champions in men’s singles, women’s singles and mixed doubles respectively).

Lin Dan has won a record six men’s singles title at the event. Wang Shixian, Liu Xin and Chen Yufei have won two women’s singles titles each at the tournament.
The prize pool for the competition as of 2023 is USD $11,50,000. The singles champion takes away USD $80,500, whereas the doubles champion team gets $85,100.
