The Monterrey Open is a professional women’s tennis tournament that is played as a part of the US Open series. It was first held in 2009 and began as a WTA International event. It was rebranded as a WTA 250 event between 2021 to 2023. The 2024 season saw the event get further upgradation as a WTA 500 event.
The tournaments hosts a singles and a doubles event each. The outdoor hard court event first hosts a qualifying draw featuring 24 players. Four of these players make it to the main draw of 28. Two spots are reserved for wild card entrants whereas the remainder of the spots are occupied based on the global ranking of the players. The doubles draw on the other hand features a bracket of 16.
To win a match, a team or a pair has to win in a best of three sets format. A set is won when six games are secured with a difference of two. A set score of 6-6 leads to a tiebreak. This tiebreak is won by the player or the team who wins seven points with a difference of two points. In doubles, the deciding set is played as a tiebreak. The team who is first to ten points with a difference of two points is declared the winner.
The winner of the two events get 500 points whereas the runner-up get 325 points. A prize pool of $922,573 was declared for the 2024 season. The singles champion receives $142,000 whereas the doubles winner gets $47,390.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova holds the record for winning a record four singles titles. The inaugural WTA 500 event was won by Linda Noskova. Barbora Strycova, Iveta Benesova, Alicja Rosolska, and Asia Muhammad have won two doubles titles each.
