What is the Women’s T20 East Asia Cup in cricket?

The Women’s T20 East Asia Cup is a professional cricket tournament that is contested between the national sides of Japan, China, South Korea, and Hong Kong. The tournament began in 2015 and is played in the T20 format.

Initially, the tournament was not recognised by the International Cricket Council. The first edition of the event was held in 2015. The tournament was supposed to alternate each year from a men’s event to a women’s event. It was only after the first two editions (2015 and 2017) that the women’s T20 East Asia Cup got recognition from the International Cricket Council. All matches, starting from the 2019 edition got an official T20 International status.

After the 2019 edition, all four participating countries signed an agreement to make the tournament an annual event. However, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, no competition was held in 2020 and 2021. The 2022 edition is the only event which featured only two sides, Japan and South Korea. This was the only event wherein the winner was decided based on a four-match T20I series.

When all four participating teams pitched against each other yet again in 2023, the final was yet nothing less than eventful. Hong Kong won the final against China in a Super Over. History was made yet again in 2024, when Mongolia became the fifth national team to participate in the women’s T20 East Asia Cup.

All four original member nations take turns in hosting the competition. An edition rarely exceeds seven days. Each team plays the other in a league stage held in the round-robin format. A win is worth two points, one point is awarded to both sides for a tie or no result, and no points are deducted for a loss. The top two teams at the end of the group stage contest the finals. Teams placed third and fourth face each other for the third place. In case of a tie in the points in the group stage, the net run rate decides the better side.

Hong Kong is the most successful side at the women’s T20 East Asia Cup, having won four titles as of 2024.
