What is the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy in cricket?

The Senior Women’s T20 Trophy is a premier T20 competition of India. It features women’s state teams that compete for the title in the T20 format. The event began in 2008-09 and is managed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

A total of 37 teams participate in the competition as of 2024. These teams are divided into five groups based on their standings in the tournament from the previous year. Each team in a group plays their respective group member in a round-robin format.

A match win is worth four points whereas no points are awarded for a loss. If the match is tied, both teams get two points each. If two teams are tied at the same number of points, then the one with the higher net run-rate is preferred. At the end of the group stage, the top two teams in each group progress to the knockout stages.

Results from the inaugural edition of the tournament were not recorded. Since 2009, Railways have dominated the event, winning eleven titles, whereas Delhi, Mumbai, and Punjab have won one title each. Smriti Mandhana has twice been the highest run-scorer in this event, achieving this feat in 2012 and 2015.

No bowler has been the highest wicket-takers in more than one instance. Nidhi Buley, Nupur Kohale, and Saika Ishaque hold the joint-record of picking 18 wickets each (maximum tally) in separate editions of the event.

The tournament continues to showcase the budding players in the T20 format. Based on their performances in the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy, they stand a chance to get into the national side.
