What is the Senior Women’s T20 Challenger in cricket?

The Senior Women’s T20 Challenger is a women’s T20 domestic competition held in India. It began in 2009 and was contested between three teams named India Blue, India Green, and India Red. The addition of the fourth team and the renaming of the teams to India A, India B, India C, and India D happened in 2019-20.

The matches are played in the T20 format. Each team plays the other once in a round-robin format. A team gets 4 points for a win, 2 points for a tie or an abandoned match, and no points for a loss. The top two teams at the end of the league stage contest the final. If two teams are tied at the same number of points, then the better side is decided by the number of wins, head-to-head record, and net run rate.

The tournament has not been held regularly. Its inaugural edition in 2009 after which the next three editions were held in 2018, 2019, and 2022. India Green, India Blue, India C, and India D were the winners of each edition chronologically. In 2024, an India E team was added to the tournament. Each team features a squad of 14 players.

The tournament serves as one of the many platforms that paves the way for women’s cricketers to make it to the national side. As of 2023-24, the highest total recorded by a team in the tournament is 165 runs which was recorded by India B against India C in 2023-24.
