What is the Merida Open in tennis?

The Merida Open is a women’s professional tennis tournament that is played on outdoor hard courts. It first began in 2023 and is categorised as a WTA 250 event on the Women’s Tennis Association tour. It is held in Yucatan Country Club in Mexico.

Both singles and doubles events are held at the event. The singles main draw size of 32 has provisions for four qualifiers and three wild card entrants. The qualifiers are chosen based on their performance in a qualifying draw of 16. Draw size of the doubles event features 16 teams. Both the events are played in a single elimination knockout format.

The tournament follows the conventional scoring system of best of three sets. A player or side wins a set when they win six games with a difference of two. A tiebreak is played when the set score is tied at 6-6. The side who is first to seven points with a difference of two wins the set. Scoring is similar for doubles only that the final set is played as a match tiebreak. The duo who is ten points with a difference of two wins the match.

As of 2024, the total prize money for the tournament is USD $267,082. The singles and doubles champion gets $35,250 and USD $12,820 respectively. Additionally, the champions earn 250 ranking points whereas the runners-up get 163 points.

The inaugural edition held in 2023 was won by Camilia Giorgi, whereas the doubles champions were Caty McNally and Diane Parry.
