The Indonesia Open is one of the four Super 1000 events on the Badminton World Federation’s circuit of professional badminton events. It is one of the most prestigious badminton tournaments that began in 1982. The tournament is organized by the Badminton Association of Indonesia along with the Badminton World Federation.
The Indonesia Open is known for the fact that it is held in over 13 venues ever since its inception. Men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles are the five categories of events that are featured at the Indonesian Open. Each event has a draw size of 32 players or teams and is played in a single elimination knockout format.
Each match is played in the best of three sets format, with the player or team to win 21 points with a difference of two points winning the set. As of 2024, the tournament rewards the champion with 12,000 ranking points, and the runner-up with 10,200 points. Semifinalists and quarterfinalists secure 8400 and 6600 points for their run respectively. The Indonesia Open has a prize pool of $1.3 million. The winner of the singles categories get $91,500, whereas the winning doubles sides get $96,200.
Three players in the men’s singles category are tied for winning a record six titles – Ardy Wiranata, Taufik Hidayat, and Lee Chong Wei. Furthermore, five players hold the record for winning four men’s doubles titles – Hariamanto Kartono, Ricky Sibagja, Rexy Mainaky, Candra Wijaya, Lee Yong Dae. Susi Susanti’s tally of six women’s singles titles remains unmatched. Rosiana Tendean, Eliza Nathanael, and Yu Yang have been a part of a record three women’s doubles champion teams. Tri Kusharjanto and Minarti Timur hold the joint-record for winning six mixed doubles titles.
Indonesian players have been the most successful at their home event. They have produced 84.5 champion players (.5 represents a doubles player who teamed up with a player from another nation). China has been the next best successful nation with 55 of their players securing a title finish.
