The Halle Open is one of the oldest grass court tennis events on the professional men’s tennis circuit. It began in 1991 and has been held in Halle, Germany. It is a part of the ATP 500 series of tennis tournaments since 2015. Before 2015, the event was a part of the ATP 250 series. Since it is a grass court event, it serves as a build-up tournament leading to the Wimbledon championships.
The tournament is played in outdoor conditions and features a men’s singles and men’s doubles competition. The singles event features a main draw and a qualifying draw. The qualifying draw has a strength of 16. Players need to win two matches on a trot to make it to the main draw. The main draw has four spots reserved for qualifiers and three spots reserved for wild card entrants. The doubles draw size is of 16.
Each match is played in the best of three sets format. Players need to win six games with a difference of two to win a set. At a set score of 6-6, a tiebreak is played where the player who wins seven points with a difference of two wins the set. In doubles, the third set is played as a ten-point tiebreaker that decides the winner of the match.
Winners of the singles and doubles events get 500 points. The runner-up in singles and doubles get 330 and 300 points respectively. As of 2024, the tournament has a total prize pool of €22,55,655. The singles champion receives €421,790, whereas the doubles champions get €138,550.
Roger Federer is the most successfully player at the Halle Open, having won a record ten titles in singles. Raven Klaasen and Marcelo Melo hold the record for winning three doubles titles each.
