What is the Fairbreak Invitational T20 in cricket?

The Fairbreak Invitational T20 is a private tournament that is sanctioned by the International Cricket Council. It is managed by cricket Hong Kong and owned by Fairbreak Global. The main goal of the event was to promote gender equality.

The first edition of the event was held in 2022. Each year, the tournament has featured six teams. Each team had a squad of 15 players. Players from 35 to 37 countries participate in this competition.

The teams face each other in a round-robin format wherein each team plays the other once. A match win is worth three points, no points are awarded for a loss, whereas a tied or abandoned match leads to both teams being gifted with two points each. A bonus point is awarded in each match to the team who scored more runs at the end of ten overs in the innings.

If two teams are tied at the same number of points at the end of the round-robin stage, then the number of match wins and net run-rate act as tiebreaker. After the round-robin stage, the top four teams progress to the semifinals.

The 2022 edition held in Dubai was won by Tornadoes, whereas the subsequent edition was won by Warriors in Hong Kong. In each edition, the Falcons finished as the runners-up. Both editions saw Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu as the highest run-scorer. Sophie Ecclestone and Kathryn Bryce were the leading wicket-takers in 2022 and 2023 editions respectively.

The tournament is broadcast in over 15 geographical regions. The third edition is set to be held in the USA, thereby promoting women’s cricket in the continent along with gender equality.
