What is the Arctic Open in badminton?

The Arctic Open is a professional badminton tournament that was first held in 1990. Initially known as the Finnish Open, the tournament was not held between 1994-95, 1997-2001, 2011, and 2020-22. Currently, it is a part of the Super 500 series of events on the Badminton World Federation tour.

The tournament hosts events in all five disciplines of the sport – men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Each event has a draw size of 32. The top eight ranked players and teams are seeded in the single elimination knockout draw.

All matches in the tournament are played in the best of three sets format. The player or pair who is first to 21 points with a difference of two wins the set. If the score reaches 20-20, then play continues until one of the sides has a clear lead of two points.

As of 2024, the Badminton Finland organized event has a total prize money of USD $420,000. The singles champion gets USD $31,500 whereas the doubles champions receive USD $33,180. All winners earn 9200 ranking points whereas the runners-up get 7800 points. The quarterfinalists and semifinalists get 5040 and 6420 points respectively.

Joachim Persson has won a record three men’s singles titles at the event. The men’s doubles events has been won twice each by Kim Astrup, Evgenij Isakov, and Anders Rasmussen. Han Yue and Pernille Nedergaard have won the women’s singles event twice each. The women’s doubles event has been won four times each by Misato Aratama, Petya Nedelcheva, Marlene Thomsen, and Akane Watanabe. In mixed doubles, Lena Grevak has won a record three titles as of 2024. Denmark has produced a record 34.5 champions and is the most successful nation at the event. Home nation Finland has only seen three of its players at the podium.
