What is the Champions One Day Cup in cricket?

The Champions One Day Cup is a one of the three new domestic tournaments introduced by the Pakistan Cricket Board in 2024. The inaugural edition of the event was held in 2024 and was played in the 50-over format (One Day International).

The tournament features five teams, each containing a roster of 30 players. Each team was named after animals, namely Markhors, Stallions, Panthers, Lions, and Dolphins. The teams faced each other in a single round-robin format, where a team would face the other at least once. A match win was worth 10 points. No points were deducted for a loss, and an abandoned match would lead to each team getting five points.

Additionally, teams can also earn bonus points based on their performance. A win margin by 8, 9, or 10 wickets was worth 1, 2, or 3 bonus points respectively. A win by 50,75, or 100 runs was worth 1, 2, or 3 bonus points respectively. An innings total between 350-374 would earn the team one bonus point, whereas a total of over 375 would fetch two bonus points. If a team manages to get eight wickets of the opposition, then 1 bonus point is awarded. If the team manages to bowl out the team (all 10 wickets), then 2 bonus points are awarded. A score of over 100 in the powerplay earns the batting team two bonus points. If the bowling side takes three wickets in a powerplay, then they get one bonus point.

In the league stage, if two teams are tied at the same number of points, then net run-rate acts as the tiebreaker. At the end of the league stage, the top two teams contest the first qualifier. The third and fourth placed teams play each other in an eliminator. The second qualifier is played between the loser of the first qualifier and the winner of the eliminator.

The Panthers won the inaugural edition which was held in Faisalabad. Mohammad Hasnain’s 17-wicket tally earned him the man of the series award. The highest run-scorer of the tournament was Usman Khan with 272 runs to his name. A whooping 30 million Pakistani Rupees is awarded to the winning side, whereas the runner-up side receives 15 million.
