Stan Nagaiah was a cricketer who represented both Singapore and Malaysia in the 1950s. Cricket in both nations has been played regularly after the second World War. However, both these nations became a member of the Asian Cricket Council only after the late 1960s.
The two teams have played cricket against each since the late 19th century. However, archival records of the matches between the two sides have been obscure. Beginning in 1850s, Singapore took nearly a decade to finally come up with a formidable side who could record a score of over 100 runs. Malaysia on the other hand gained prominence in the 1920s when they defeated an Australian side by 39 runs.
It is difficult to pinpoint the first match between Singapore and Malaysia. This is because both nations were a part of the Strait Settlements and the cricket clubs of both nations were seen as affiliates. When Singapore gained independence in 1965, it left the Malayan Cricket Association.
The inception of the Stan Nagaiah Trophy took place in 1995. Initially, the matches were held in the One Day International format. Between 1995 to 2018 the tournament was held annually except in 2007, 2015, and 2017. As of 2024, Singapore have won seven series, Malaysia have won 13, and one series has ended in a draw.
The tournament returned in 2022. It was the first series that was exclusively held in the T20 International format. Each match played now has a T20 International status. The series was won by Malaysia 2-1.
