What is Decoturf in the sport of tennis?

Decoturf is a synthetic hard court surface that gained prominence as a tennis surface in the late 1970s. It was notably used at the US Open, one of the four Major Slams of tennis. Decoturf remained the official surface of the US Open between 1978 to 2019.

Decoturf is known for providing durable solutions at a rate that is relatively cheaper compared to other competitors when it comes to maintenance. It offers three types of surfaces: Deco Hardcourt, Deco Cushion, and Deco Premier Court.

The Deco Hardcourt is known for withstanding any temperature in both indoor and outdoor conditions. On a base of concrete or asphalt is an acrylic resurfacer of silica. This has a layer of texture closure which determines the pace of the court. A finish course that can resist degradation from ultraviolet radiation is coated on which the final finish of line paint follows.

The Deco Cushion differs from Deco Hardcourt as the former has two layers of rubber course. The SBR rubber granules in two sizes are layered to give the Deco Cushion a distinguished shock-absorbing surface. Finally, there is the Deco Premier Court, which is the most elite output of Decoturf. It comes with a 25-year warranty whose acrylic resin can prevent the courts from cracking.

The Decoturf has been used in professional tennis tournaments like the Washington Open, Dubai Championships, Canada Masters, China Open, Japan Open, and Shanghai Masters. More notably, in the 21st century, the Decoturf was used in three Olympic Games – 2004 Athens, 2008 Beijing, and 2020 Tokyo.
