The US Open Badminton Championships began in 1954. It became an international tournament that year as it became open to international players. The tournament is co-organised by USA Badminton and the Badminton World Federation.
The tournament was staged only once between 1974 to 1982, and was not held between 2020 to 2022. The US Open badminton championships is a part of the Super 300 series of professional badminton tournaments.
There are five events which are played at the US Open badminton championships. These events are the men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Each event features a single elimination knockout draw. A match is played in the best of three sets format. A player or a team wins a set when they win 21 points with a difference of two points.
As of 2024, the tournament offers 7000 points to the champion player or team, and 5950 points to the runners-up. A semifinalist and a quarterfinalist finish gives 4900 and 3850 points respectively. The tournament has a prize pool of $210,000. The singles champions get $15,750 whereas the doubles champions get $16,590.
Former Danish player Erland Kops has won a record three men’s singles titles. American player Tony Gunawan has won a record six men’s doubles titles. No player has dominated the US Open Badminton Championships the way Judy Devlin has. She won a record 11 women’s singles titles, six women’s doubles titles, and five mixed doubles titles.
The best performing nation has been the United States of America. 72 players from the country have lifted the trophy at their home event. The next best nation is South Korea with 33 of its players being champions.
