Clive Lloyd was one of the greatest captains of West Indies cricket. Under his leadership, West Indies reached the finals of the first three cricket World Cups, winning two of them. He captained West Indies to 27 test matches without losing. This included a stint of 11 consecutive wins.
Lloyd was also a prolific middle-order batter. He scored over 7000 runs in international test cricket, with an average of nearly 47. The Guyanese cricketer was also the first ever cricketer from West Indies to have 100 international caps.
Lloyd has been honoured by the cricket associations of Zimbabwe and West Indies. The test series played between the two nations is named the Clive Lloyd Trophy. In the 1999-2000 season the two teams first played a test series which the West Indies won 2-0. It was from the subsequent edition, that the Clive Lloyd Trophy was introduced.
As of 2024, the Clive Lloyd Trophy has been held four times (2001, 2003, 2012, 2017). Three of these series have been hosted by Zimbabwe. West Indies have won all the editions and have retained the bronze statuette of Lloyd each time. Out of the eight test matches played across all the series, West Indies have won five and three of them have been drawn.
Chris Gayle was the man of the series in the first two editions of the Clive Lloyd Trophy. As of 2024, he holds the record for the most runs scored in the Clive Lloyd Trophy (452). The leading run-scorer for Zimbabwe is Craig Wishart with 331 runs. Zimbabwe’s Ray Price is the leading wicket-taker of the competition with 24 wickets. West Indies’ Shane Shillingford is the second most successful bowler with 19 wickets.
