The Stuttgart Open is a professional tennis tournament all the men’s tour. It began in 1978 as a clay court event and was held on the surface till 2014. In 2015, the ATP 250 event switched to grass courts. It has since been scheduled as a build-up event leading to Wimbledon.
The Stuttgart Open is one of the oldest ATP tournaments, laying its foundation in 1916. However, due to the advent of the World War, the first edition was officially held in 1949. The tournament is held in both singles and doubles format. The singles main draw size is 28, out of which four spots are for qualifiers and three for wildcard entrants. The size of the doubles draw is sixteen.
Played by the conventional rules, all matches of the tournament are played in the best of three sets format. A player has to win six games with a difference of two to win a set. If a set score reaches a score of 6-6, then a tiebreak decides the winner. The player who reaches seven points with a difference of two wins the set. In doubles, the deciding set isnplayed as a tiebreak. The doubles side who wins ten points first with a difference of two wins the match.
The winners in both singles and doubles get 250 points each. The runners-up gets 165 points each. As of 2024, the prize pool for the tournament is €734,915. The winner of the singles and doubles events get €111,785 and €38,840 respectively.
The most successful player of the singles event is Rafael Nadal, who won three titles. Additionally, the Spaniard is the only player to win the event on two different surfaces. Colin Dowdeswell, Frew McMillan, Mate Pavic, and Bruno Soares are the players who hold the joint-record for winning two doubles titles each.
