What is the ATP Lyon Open in tennis?

The ATP Lyon Open refers to one of the four ATP 250 tennis tournaments held in France. The tournament is organized by the Association of Tennis Professionals and is played on outdoor clay courts. It was first held in 2017.

The tournament features a men’s singles and a men’s doubles tournament. The draw size for the singles event is 28. Out of this, three spots are for wild card entrants, eight highest ranked players who are seeded, and four spots that are reserved for qualifiers. The qualifying draw is played in the knockout format before the main draw matches begin. The doubles draw features 16 doubles teams which has four seeded players.

Each match in the tournament is played in the best of three sets format. If a match goes to a deciding set in singles, then a tiebreak is played at a set score of six games apiece. The player who wins seven points in the tiebreaker with a difference of two wins the match. In doubles, the deciding set is played as a tiebreaker. The team who reaches to ten points first with a difference of two wins the match.

The winner of either event gets 250 points. The singles runner-up gets 165 points, whereas the doubles runner-ups get 150 points. The semifinalists of singles and doubles get 100 and 90 points respectively. As of 2024, the tournament has a prize money of €562,815. The singles champion gets €88,125 whereas the doubles team gets €30,610.

In its seven edition held till date, no player has won the singles title twice. Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie is the only player to reach the final twice. Ivan Dodig holds the record for winning two doubles titles.
