The Malaysia Masters is a Super 500 event on the Badminton World Federation’s professional circuit. The tournament began in 2009 and has been played in six different locations till date. As of 2024, it is held in Kuala Lumpur and organized by the Badminton Association of Malaysia.
The tournament is played across all five disciplines – men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Each event features a knockout draw with 32 brackets for players or pairs. A tournament match is played in the best of three sets format. The player who reaches 21 points first with a difference of two points is considered the winner of the set.
The winner of an event gets 9200 points whereas the runner-up gets 7800 points. Semi-finalists and quarterfinalists are given 6420 and 5040 points respectively. As of 2024, the tournament has a total purse of $420,000. The winners of singles events are rewarded with $31,500 whereas the doubles winners receive $33,180.
Lee Wong Chei has won a record five men’s singles titles in his home event. No men’s doubles team has won more than two titles at the tournament. Koo Kien Keat, Tan Boon Heong, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon, Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto have won two titles each.
India’s P.V. Sindhu and Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon have won two women’s singles titles each. The Danish pair of Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Ryter Juhl is the only team to win the women’s doubles title twice. Zhang Siwei is the most successful mixed doubles player with three titles to her name.
As of 2024, China and Indonesia have been the most successful nations at the event, winning 13 titles each. Malaysia and Japan are the next best nations with 12 and 8 titles respectively.
