Can tennis be played only with a forehand shot?

A racquet or paddle sport requires the player to hit the ball from either direction. A shot wherein the swing of the racquet or paddle is such that the face of the palm is in front is called a forehand. A shot where the back of the palm is in front is called a backhand. Both these shots can be played by one or both hands.

In some rare cases, spectators might be witness to players playing a forehand shot with both wings. This is completely legal as no rule in the book prohibits a player from doing this. It is not a mandate to have one forehand and one backhand.

The advantage of having two forehands is that the player would rarely make an informed error, given that a forehand is a more reliable shot than the backhand traditionally. However, a big challenge for such a style of play is that during a rally, switching hands to hit forehands from both ends might take more time than the conventional style of play. This especially becomes tricky when the rally becomes intensified at the net.

Playing forehand from both sides has its own fervor. A player can hit a forehand slice, forehand topspin, forehand drop shot, and can even chip and charge from both wings, making it an uphill task for the opponent to break through.

Players with two forehands also have the ability to serve from both wings. This means that from both the deuce and the ad-court, these players can switch their hands to target a serve either out wide or down the centre service line. There is no downside to this tactic except that a player’s preferences of the serving wing from either end might become predictable as the match progresses.

Thus, it is completely legal for a tennis player to have two forehands and in addition, two serves.
