What is the Spain Masters in badminton?

Spain Masters is a professional badminton tournament that is a part of the Super 300 series of the Badminton World Federation’s annual circuit of events. The first edition of the Spain Masters was held in 2018 at Barcelona. The tournament was played in Huleva for the 2020 and 2021 edition, and at Madrid in 2023. The 2022 edition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain.

The tournament features matches played in men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Each event is played in the knockout draw format. Each draw has 32 players in its singles tournaments and 32 pairs in the doubles events. In each category, the eight highest ranked players or pairs are seeded.

The tournament is organized by the Spanish Badminton Federation and offers a prize pool of USD 210,000. The winner of the singles tournament receives $15,750 and the winner of the doubles tournament get $16,590. Furthermore, the singles and the doubles champions get 7000 ranking points. The runner-up and semi-finalists of each event get 5950 and 4900 points respectively.

Aa of 2024, Denmark is the most successful country, having seven title winners at the Spain Masters. Two of these titles belongs to Viktor Axelsen, who holds this unparalleled record in the men’s singles category. Apart from Axelsen, no player in any discipline of the tournament (singles or doubles) has won a title more than once. The next best nation is Indonesia, whose players have lifted a trophy at the Spain Masters six times.
